Osprey Men-at-Arms 359 : Canadian Forces in World War II
Canadian forces made a major contribution to the war against Germany; with over a million men and women in uniform. Canada was the first Commonwealth country to send troops to Britain in 1939. During 1939-45 more than 40 per cent of the male population between the ages of 18 and 45 enlisted, virtually all of them volunteers. Canadians fought with tragic courage in Europe 1940, Hong Kong garrison December 1941, and Dieppe Raid August 1942; with growing strength and confidence in Sicily, Italy 1943 and Normandy on Juno Beach D-Day 1944; and finally the 1st Canadian Army advanced through the Low Countries into Germany 1944-45 to see the liberation of NW Europe. René Chartrand provides a concise account of an extraordinary national effort in the cause of freedom supported by data tables, photos, and eight colour plates by Ronald B. Volstad - Canada's most knowledgeable military illustrator. An appendix lists every regiment mobilised.
