Osprey Trade Editions : Tribes of the Sioux Nation
This book provides a welcome in-depth study of the origins, development and history of the Sioux culture and peoples, covering all seven of their divisions, in peacetime and at war. The author first focuses on the rise of the Tetons, detailing Western Sioux history from 1804 to 1850, before moving on to look at the Minnesota uprising of 1862 and the clashes at Laramie. Detailed coverage is then given to the climactic and cataclysmic 'final struggle', in the decades of the Frontier wars, before the author moves on to an assessment of the changes and constrictions applied following the creation of the reservations. Biographical profiles are also given of the principal Sioux leaders, and the text is illustrated with contemporary photographs, as well as 8 superbly vivid colour plates. Text by Michael Johnson with illustrations by Jonathan Smith.
