Osprey Warrior 25 : Italian Militiaman 1260-1392
Violence played an important part in the lives of the inhabitants of late Medieval Italy. Not only was war constantly breaking out between the numerous city-states that made up the country, but also internal strife was often rife within the communes as different aristocratic factions fought each other for domination of the cities' governments. It is therefore perhaps unsurprising that during this period Italian warfare developed quickly. David Nicolle has produced an excellent book in which he places the evolution of Italian arms within its proper social and political context. In particular, he places much emphasis on the technological development of the crossbow and the effects this had not only on other military accoutrements, such as armour, but also on the resultant changes in military affairs and organisation. The examination of the development of this important weapon is a key part of an extensive investigation into the units that used them - the Italian city militias. All aspects of these units are examined, from their organisation and arming to their eventual supersedence by professional soldiers in the late 14th century. Furthermore the Italian militiaman himself is carefully studied : David Nicolle not only investigates his life-style and attitudes during times of peace but also recounts the manufacture of his arms, his fashion of dress, and even looks into his motivations in fighting for his home-state. The book providing a comprehensive view of all aspects of the late Medieval Italian city militias from the weaponry, attitudes and social backgrounds of their members to the Italian political context that made such formations so necessary.
