This book follows one soldier ('Joseph') as he is drafted in February 1941, assigned to a Regular Army regiment in the 4th Division, and lives and trains with the 22nd Infantry in the United States until January 1944 when it ships to England. On June 6, 1944, he lands on Utah Beach in Normandy and in the following months, fights through France, Belgium, and into Germany. The European Theatre of Operations is seen by many as the major theatre of World War II, with more infantry regiments serving there than any other theatre. Combat was sustained and brutal, with infantrymen seldom coming out of the line to rest and refit. This book particularly deals with the problems the common soldier faced between June 1944 and May 1945.
